When the movie recommendation algorithms keep failing me, I turn to Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Letterboxd lists, and strangers on Reddit. Other than noticing that they all seem to keep recommending the same group of movies, I still often leave disappointed even when they are highly rated.
Then I started to notice a pattern among the few movies I totally enjoyed: when I looked them up on Wikipedia, every single article stated that the film had received acclaim from critics.
And that got me wondering: what if there are many more like them on Wikipedia, and I would enjoy all of them? Hell yeah.
So I wrote a Python script and let it do its thing for 3 hours on the entire 150GB English archive of Wikipedia. The result? Over 1,700 films, from 83 countries, across 19 genres, dating back to 1910s. And here is the best part: I don't see most of them being recommended elsewhere!
